Do You Need Campervan Insurance?

Not all campervans are the same, so it’s essential that you get the right insurance for your vehicle.

What do you need to insure a campervan?

Like any type of insurance, certain paperwork must be provided to receive a quote.

First, you’ll need to provide your campervan’s exact make, model and registration number. It is also beneficial to provide the value of the vehicle as well.

You also need to list the names and details of anyone who will be driving the campervan as this can affect any claims made.

Then you’ll need to show your insurance history, previous claims and eligibility for a no-claims discount.

Are there different types of campervan insurance?

Fully comprehensive

Choosing this type of insurance ensures that your campervan will be properly covered in the following circumstances:

  • In the event of accidental damage

  • Fire damage

  • Theft

  • Vandalism

A fully comprehensive cover is a great option if your campervan is brand-new or like-new as they are typically more expensive than used ones. A newer campervan may also be more of a target for thieves.

Third-party, fire and theft

This level of coverage is a step down from fully comprehensive cover as there is no accidental cover or vandalism cover. But you will still be covered for the following:

  • Fire damage

  • Theft

Third-party only

This level of insurance will only cover damage or injury to a third party.

Can you drive a campervan on car insurance?

In short, no. Because campervans will contain appliances, a bathroom and a kitchen area, they aren’t used in the same way as cars.

So you’ll need to ensure you get the right type of insurance for your campervan before you take it out on the road.

Is campervan insurance cheaper than van insurance?

Like campervans and cars, vans and campervans have different purposes.

Vans will typically be used as commercial vehicles and potentially have more claims. Whereas campervans are primarily used for leisure, while you can rent your campervan out when you’re not using it, this isn’t the norm for this type of vehicle, resulting in cheaper insurance.

Should I insure what’s in my campervan as well?

That depends on the overall value of your campervan’s interior, but it is considered best practice to ensure that you have coverage for the items inside your campervan.

In some cases, you may be able to list the items you want added to the overall policy, but for household items like the television etc., you would need to take out separate insurance.

What about if I want to take my campervan to Europe?

Because of Brexit, non-EU travellers can only travel within EU-member countries for up to 120 days without a visa, depending on the country. So it’s best to work out how long the trip will be and consider if there will be any mileage restrictions.

So when it comes to travelling around Europe, you’ll want coverage that will last for 120 days minimum. Be sure to take your time when researching insurance providers, as some may be able to offer similar levels of coverage for UK travel when in Europe.
