Tips for starting to surf
If the open water is calling your name, it is never too late to learn to surf. It’s like an art form in itself and can be super taxing on the body, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth it. Here are a few tips to get you started.
Don’t surf solo
Find someone in the know (like a teacher), or someone with experience that you trust to learn with. You don’t want to be learning or surfing solo and you want someone on hand in case you get into tricky waters, no pun intended.
Spend time with the water
It can be super helpful to sit and watch the water a while and get to know your surf spot. Every wave is different but you will get a feel for how it moves if you spend some time just watching and learning from it.
Start small
Take it easy, start small. Start with sitting, start with small waves and slowly build yourself up to where you want to go. It won’t happen overnight so learn to love the process, that is probably the best piece of advice we can give you.
Research, Practice, Repeat!
Do your research and never stop learning. Whether it be books, videos, podcasts or talking to surfers, keep asking questions and keep practicing. It is something which will require time and dedication so make sure you’re up for the task.
We would definitely recommend getting an instructor and watch some YouTube videos too. We are so lucky to have some incredible surf spots in the UK so enjoy and stay safe!
