Wild Camper Vanning

One of the beautiful things about Scotland is the freedom to travel, granted by The Scottish Outdoor Access Code. What makes it particularly exciting is the prospect of wild camping, and when done right, it is an amazing experience. Here’s our guide to wild camping so you can take your campervan wherever the road takes you with confidence.

The first thing we would say is that common sense is key. Use your intuition when choosing somewhere to pitch up for the night. Make sure that your spot isn’t blocking any through roads or access points and you don’t want to be in view of any houses. If you have picked somewhere secluded and there is someone already there, try not to encroach on their area unless you have been invited to do so. Just a little wild camping etiquette.

Staying on the theme of picking your bed for the night, you will want to make sure you avoid sensitive habitats. Wildflowers and areas which are clearly already someone or somethings home should be avoided so we can all enjoy the wonders of wild camping for years to come. Please don’t spoil the party for everyone else.

One of the main things with wild camping is the lack of electricity and often, the lack of a toilet or shower. If you need a shower, head to a campsite to freshen up but going to the loo is very doable in the wild, here’s how…

Avoid going to the toilet next to open water, you want to stay away and bury anything that won’t be washed away by the rain. Never bury toilet paper as this can be dangerous for animals, so it is best to bag it up and find the nearest bin. For cleaning inside the campervan and any utensils, use biodegradable and non-harmful products as you are the ones visiting the homes of the wildlife, so it would be a terrible shame to release harmful products into the wild.

The key things to remember are to keep mess and noise to a minimum, be sensitive to those around you and most of all, enjoy your wild camping experience.
