Classic Campervans
The classic VW campervan has become a beloved staple of motoring. Known for their distinctive boxy shape, bright colours, and iconic badge, these small campervans are beloved worldwide.
The history of the classic VW campervan
First manufactured in 1949, the classic VW campervan as we know it was designed by Heinz Nordhoff and was launched at the Geneva Motor Show. The first generation of campervans became known as ""splitties' because of their split-screen windscreen, and over the years their popularity only grew. Associated with the hippy movement of the 1960s and 70s, the simple design meant that Volkswagen could manufacture ninety different body combinations in only the first five years of production, which collectors today covet. Probably the best known of the classic VW campervans, this model was named a Type 2 (T2) Split and remains an icon to this day.
But there have been many more iterations of the VW campervans. In 1967, the beloved ""splittie' style was retired after almost 1.5 million units were produced, giving way to the ""Early Bay' in 1968, which upgraded the design and many technical elements. The suspension was better and fitted with a stabilising back bar, plus the latest technology of wind-down windows.
Throughout the 1970s and 80s, the classic VW campervan became almost unrecognisable from its origins. Although still boxy in style, it was upgraded to receive better engines, eventually being modernised into the sleeker, more modern car we recognise today.
