Wild swimming
Wild swimming seems to have grown in popularity over the last couple of years. What was once a hidden secret and almost a club of its own, is now seemingly a social media sensation. If you are keen to see what the hype is about, here are some tips for doing so safely…
Do your research
There are many health benefits to wild swimming but of course that doesn’t mean that it does not also pose risks. If you are planning on wild swimming then it is so important that you do your research first and don’t go alone. There’s whole websites dedicated to information so make sure you are fully clued up before you plan a trip.
Know where to avoid
Certain bodies of water are no-go areas for wild swimming. These include canals, urban rivers and stagnant lakes. There are plenty of ‘well-known’ wild swimming spots that you can go and enjoy, particularly if you are new to the experience.
Build up to it
It’s probably going to be way colder than you think it is. No amount of cold showering prepares you for the temperature of the water so make sure you have got the tools you need to deal with it and build up to it. Don’t expect to be in the water for thirty minutes on your first attempt, invest in a wooly hat and remember to practice your breathing.
Choose your climate
A few degrees makes a big difference. Think about where you are going to go and how cold the water will be, particularly in the cooler months. There are plenty of resources available for you to check out this information so you’re not left in cold water, pun intended.
