Free places to park overnight in Scotland

There is one thing that unites campervan enthusiasts around the world and that is… A yearning for freedom! That’s the reason that many of us purchase a camper in the first place. The freedom to go and sleep anywhere at the drop of a hat is hard to beat, especially when you find the perfect location to call your home for the night. That being said, we explore some of the best places in Scotland where you can sleep in your camper. What’s more, they’re all free…

3 Free Places to Park in Scotland

Neist Point, Isle of Skye

In fairness, you could pull up just about anywhere in Skye and think you have found the perfect spot. It really is such a majestic place! However, we have listed this as a personal favourite thanks to the amazing views that both sunrise and sunset provide. There are no facilities nearby (as this is simply a road on which you park) so preparation is essential. Wake up early and take a walk down to Neist Point lighthouse, where you can often catch glimpses of sea eagles, dolphins and wales.

Vatersay, Outer Hebrides

It’s hard to get more remote than the Isle of Skye, but if an escape into the wilderness is something that you yearn for then head to Vatersay. The realities of island life slowly start to sink in as you familiarize yourself with the island, learning of the 350 souls who sadly lost their lives in 1853 when the emigrant ship on which they were travelling was caught in a vicious storm. There is something cathartic about considering the hardships of island life while also staring out into tranquil aquatic waters, reminding yourself of the determination and strength that these islanders possess.

Parking Loch Garten Osprey Center

This is a beautiful spot, surrounded by foliage and wildlife and also has access to fantastic facilities. It is recommended that you arrive after 5pm to avoid the crowds, many of whom are visiting the wildlife center. A visit to the nature reserve is definitely a must while you are here, where you are likely to find ospreys, red squirrels and bank voles in abundance. It may not be as remote as the other places on this list, but waking up near the shores of the lake to the sounds of birds doesn’t sound too bad…
